While I was going through Dulquer Salmaan’s Wikipedia page I read his answer to the question why he chose acting and this was it, quoting exactly what the actor said, “somewhere down the lane my life became monotonous and routine”. He said it an interview back in 2012. When we see Dulquer Salmaan evolving as an actor with each film it is understood that acting was his true calling. The actor, despite being a superstar’s son didn’t choose a big film for his debut. He tried to convince the audience as a guy next door and slowly deleted the “Mammootty’s son” notion from people’s mind. His good looks and attractive baritone were the instant attractions and as the audience kept noticing, the actor kept growing. He cleverly escaped from the image trap and tried donning new avatars. The initial criticism that came his way was that he could do only urban roles well, till then all of his successful films like Ustad Hotel, ABCD and Bangalore Days had him as an uber-cool youngster. Vikramadithyan and Njaan started changing perceptions. Mani Ratnam’s new age romantic blockbuster OK Kanmani pulled off a wide fan base for Dulquer. Not just the Tamil audience but even the Andhra, Karnataka audience were impressed by Dulquer’s portrayal of Aadi. Charlie released and we didn’t see Dulquer Salmaan on screen at all. It was just the free spirited Charlie there. He transformed himself as the character. Kerala State Award for Best Actor was given to Dulquer. Kammattipadam opened well but people didn’t know what to expect, the film had an ‘A’ certificate due to excessive violence. But the film happened to be one of the best films of the decade. Dulquer played Krishnan in a structured metre. He controlled every move to keep the character as real as possible, he had to also play a middle-aged life of the same role. By this film, even people who weren’t impressed by the actor stopped doubting his acting ability. He pleased the family audience with Jomonte Suvisheshangal directed by Sathyan Anthikkad. Currently his next film, Comrade in America is scheduled to release on May 5 and it is directed by ace cinematographer and film maker Amal Neerad. Dulquer is currently the youth icon if Malayalam cinema and is loved by audience of all ages.
It is normal if an actor’s fans look forward for his next release and seldom this happens to a filmmaker, but in case of CIA, people are most excited about the Amal Neerad-Dulquer Salmaan combo. But before we move on to CIA, we will take a look at the director’s career. Amal Neerad started his journey to be a cinematographer from the Satyajith Ray Film and Television Institute. He had won a national while studying and also a scholarship to study in Babel Berg Studio in Berlin. He landed up in the Malayalam film industry with Ranjith’s Black with Mammootty as the lead and also did cinematography for few films in Hindi under RGV productions. In 2007, Amal Neerad made his directorial debut with Big B. The film is considered as the most stylish film in Malayalam cinema and Mammootty’s body language and dialogue delivery got widely loved by fans. The films that released after Big B didn’t receive much appreciation even though the makings were always brilliant. Amal Neerad had worked with both Mohanlal and Prithviraj. In 2013’s anthology film 5 Sundarikal, Amal Neerad’s Kullante Bharya was the common favorite, he worked with Dulquer Salmaan in it. The film travelled through Dulquer’s narrative about the new tenants in the housing colony. In 2014 Amal Neerad did cinematography, wrote and directed Inyobinte Pusthakam. The film received brilliant reviews and had one of the best cinematography in the history of Malayalam cinema. He also received a Kerala State Award for Best Cinematography. Now he is directing and producing Comrade In America (CIA). The film was expected to release in the second half of 2016. The recently released teaser and spectacularly designed posters have already created a huge buzz. Amal Neerad is considered to be one of the most stylish filmmakers we have. Though he is a cinematographer, the visuals in his films will always mesmerize the audience. The colors that he use and the frames he fix are always looked upon by aspiring film makers and cinematographers. He always brings in a western flavor to the making of the films and the slow motion shots in his films are also the highlights.
Comrade In America is shot in both Kerala and in the United States of America. The film’s tag line is ‘How far will you go for love’ so certainly the plot revolves around romance. But in the teaser we see Dulquer in a stylish action mode, he may be a student leader in the college. The college factor is also an exciting one as the Malayali audience always love campus films. The posters look extra ordinary and they are the ones who retain the hype. Apart from guessing what the film is going to be, we can definitely look forward for a few elements like the visuals, the foreign locations would be beautifully captured. Dulquer fans can expect a stylish hit for the actor like his father have had Big B. The music and the bgm in the teaser by Gopi Sundar were absolutely rousing and we can expect more catchy tunes as background score. There are other actors in the film like Chandni Sreedharan, Soubin Shahir and debutante Karthika Muralidharan is casted as the female lead. The film is expected to be a romantic-action in genre. The fans are waiting to catch up the film and even the crew is happy with the way the film has turned out.
