16 Copied and 21 Remake movies of Priyadarshan!

Priyadarshan’s upcoming Tamil movie with Udhayanidhi is said to be the remake of Dileesh Poththan’s Maheshinte Prathikaram. Oh My God. Not again, Priyadarshan Sir!

With due respect. Please not again! Leave the movie as it is. Priyadarshan is famous for his authorized and unauthorized remakes of various ‘other’ language movies. Can you believe that there is 16 copied and 21 remake movies in the career of Priyadarshan spanning 35 years. He has the credit of killing great classic movies like Children of Heaven and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in the name of remake and ‘based on’.

A scene from Bumm Bumm Bole
Children of Heaven (original of Bumm Bumm Bole)

Eg. Bumm Bumm Bole is a Priyadarshan film starring Darsheel Safary, Atul Kulkarni, and Rituparna Sengupta. Bumm Bumm Bole is an authorized adaptation of the 1997 Iranian film Children of Heaven directed by Majid Majidi.

Children of Heaven deals with a brother and sister and their adventures over a lost pair of shoes. The Majid Majidi film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998. Upon release, the quality of script and filmmaking was compared it to Vittorio de Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (1948). The film went on to win numerous awards including Fajr Film Festival, the World Film Festival, the Newport International Film Festival, the Warsaw International Film Festival, and the Singapore International Film Festival. It competed for the Grand Prize at the American Film Institute’s festival of 1997.

Priyadarshan deviated from the original plot too much and loses the control over emotion in the remake. He included unwanted (or say, failed) sub-plots into the narration which look forced and completely misfit. A children movie became adult movie with the inclusion of a rape attempt, bomb blasts, brutal murders and terrorists. As an independent movie itself, Bumm Bumm Bole falls flat with over dramatic performances (except of Atul Kulkarni) and unemotional shots.

Priyadarshan is the man who directed the Kaalapani (Siraichaalai), Kaanchivaram, Kilukkam, Thenmaavin Kombathu and Oppam but we can see the ‘Real’ and ‘Original’ Priyadarshan very very rarely.
