Ponniyin Selvan: I is a period action drama film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan, based on the Tamil historical fiction novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ written by Kalki Krishnamurthy.
Produced by Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The music is composed by AR Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, and production design by Thota Tharani. The film stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and Parthiban.

Trisha Krishnan is doing the character of Kundavai Pirattiyar / Ilaiya Piratti, the Chola princess and daughter of Emperor Sundara Chola and Vallavaraiyan’s Love interest. Prakash Raj as Sundara Chola alias Parantaka Chola II, the emperor of Chola empire, father of Aditya Karikalan, Kundavai and Arulmozhivarman. Aishwarya Rai in a dual role as Nandini, a Pazhuvoor queen and wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar and Mandakini Devi, also known as Singaara Naachiyaar or Oomai Rani Nandini’s deaf and mute mother.
Aishwarya Lekshmi as Poonguzhali, also known as Samuthirakumari, a boat woman living in Kodikarai. Sarathkumar as Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, the chancellor and treasurer of the Chola kingdom from the Paluvettaraiyar clan who was respected for his valour and 64 scars he got in battles. Vikram Prabhu as Parthibendra Pallavan, friend of Aditya Karikalan, who comes from the lineage of Pallavas.
