Actor performances are most often the first thing audience note about a film. Some movies even give a feel that it is made just to glorify the performance the lead actor. For all the terrifying moments we saw onscreen in 2021, nothing was more unsettling than the police station scene in Jai Bhim. That scene is just a trailer of Manikandan’s performance. His innocent smile will haunt you long after the end title.

What a come back! Arya turns in his best performance to date since “Nan Kadavul”.
8. Samuthrakani in Writer
Samuthrakani single-handedly carries Franklin Jacob’s film in every scene. He looks and behaves like our own house member, or our neighbour. That is the best thing about him. We get the feeling that we have seen him in real life. His performance in Writer deserves applause.
7. Yogi Babu in Mandela
It’s not the kind of character that would get award recognition in India, but in another world it would be. Yogi Babu as Nelson Mandela is just fabulous.
6. SJ Surya in Maanaadu
Rarely does actors gets powerful antagonist in a mass commercial movie. When SJ Surya’s electrifying performance as DCP Dhanushkodi in “Maanaadu” is as unforgettable as Arvind Swamy’s Siddharth Abhimanyu in “Thani Oruvan”.
5. Lijimol in Jai Bhim
“Jai Bhim” is the film with a lot of big profile actors, but Lijimol stands taller. Many scenes of Jai Bhim dependent on her capacity and perfectly she presents Sengeni’s desperation.
4. Bharathiraja in Rocky
We have already seen him deliver many masterful performances before and here too, he does the same.
3. Dhanush in Karnan
The script asks a lot and he delivers. That is what he does always. He does it again. He’s a revelation. “Karnan” shows why he is already considered as one of the best actors of this generation.
